It is, after all, the most distant from Adelaide of the major wine regions that can be done as a day trip. A recent survey of customers, asked them to offer, in their words, why they had chosen Clare.
- 45% offered countryside, atmosphere, ambience, scenic, prettiest and similar descriptors.
- 24% selected wine quality as the main reason for visiting the Clare region.
- 19% saw the Clare region as being non-commercial and less people.
- 14% quoted hospitality and friendliness of the people in Clare.
If driving from Adelaide, allow two hours from the city centre. For those unfamiliar with the route, the easiest (quickest, and with least chance of taking a wrong turn) is to take National Highway One to Two Wells, then via Mallala, Balaklava, and enter the Clare region at Auburn. Polish Hill River is reached by taking the road from Sevenhill to Mintaro. All roads are sealed to the driveway. Well-organised early starters can pack a lot into a full day in the Clare. CELLAR DOOR INFORMATION AND OPENING TIMES
Opening times are 10.00am to 4.00pm on weekends and most weekdays. Being a small family-business, there are some weekdays when we reluctantly have to put out the “closed” sign.
The Wilson Vineyard doesn't claim to have the best scenic outlook of the Clare wineries, but puts its hand up for second place.Wine tasting and sales are conducted in a stone-faced underground cellar that was constructed in 1988. This, and other associated winery buildings have used stone sourced on the property. There have been extensive plantings of trees, both native and exotic types around the cellar.
